Super Bowl III: New York Jets
In honor of this year’s 50th Super Bowl, the NFL is celebrating 19 Super Bowl rematches during the regular season. Week 2 features the New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts, a rematch of Super Bowl III.
SUPER BOWL III
The 1969 Colts, then based in Baltimore, lost just 1 game in the regular season. At the time, it was widely believed that NFL teams (Colts) were far more talented than AFL teams (Jets).
Despite all the hype, Jets QB Joe Namath famously guaranteed a victory in Super Bowl III. His team helped him back up that talk on game day, building a 16-0 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Johnny Unitas, who’d been hurt all year, entered the game for the Colts in the fourth quarter. But one late touchdown drive led by Unitas was not enough to prevent the upset.
Joe Namath finished 17-28 for 206, taking home Super Bowl III MVP honors and cementing his legend in the Jets’ 16-7 victory.
The limited ’47 collection, inspired by Joe Namath and the New York Jets’ Super Bowl III victory, coming soon.
