Dream with me, here. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Smell the fresh spring air…. . the freshly mowed grass…. . the popcorn and peanuts……Can you hear that sound through the crowd of people, clapping and cheering? It’s the hum of some kind of motor in the distance. The crowd’s collective cheers grow louder. The young kids are wide-eyed and waving their arms around like wild. What is happening? Why, it’s the beloved Phillie Phanatic, charging down the field on his 4-wheeler, ready to start his antics. It’s a beautiful day in Veteran Stadium, circa……let’s say, 1987 (which would have made me 7 years old at the time), and there I am with my older brother, our baseball gloves stuffed near the arm rests of our 3rd baseline seats, where we are excitedly digging into our plastic Phillies helmet cups, full of soft serve topped with chocolate sauce and sprinkles, and getting so messy because, well, it was a logistical nightmare to eat our ice cream AND try to get the attention of the Phillies Phanatic - what’s a kid to do?! The answer is simple: eat ice cream AND run down the steps toward the direction of the Phanatic, duh. How many of those helmet cups did we collect over the years? Who knows. But spring and summer, year after year, there we sat, cheering on our favorite baseball team, and consuming the best 1980s baseball stadium dessert a kid could want. THAT’S what this hat is. It’s nostalgia. And I will wear this nostalgia, as I continue to proudly support my favorite team from sunny South Florida. GO PHILS!
