Athletic scholarships have a long history in our country, which began in 1860s when college football began transforming from a leisure activity to a commercialized sport. On November 6, 1869, Princeton University traveled to Rutgers University to play in the first intercollegiate football game. Prior to this meeting, on-campus athletics was viewed only as an informal social opportunity for enrolled students. But when Rutgers beat Princeton on the New Jersey gridiron by a score of 6-4, the interest in the game began to grow. Shortly thereafter, schools began recruiting players and offering financial assistance in return for athletic talent. This...

As the NCAA Tournament heats, we take a look back at the lives of two legendary coaches who recently passed away, Jerry Tarkanian and Dean Smith. Jerry Tarkanian passed away on February 11, 2015. Known fondly as Tark the Shark. Tarkanian got his start with Long Beach State. After leading the 49ers to the 1973 Western Region semi finals against eventual national champions UCLA, Tarkanian took over the program at the University of Las Vegas. From 1973-1992 Tarkanian took the less than stellar program and turned it into a national powerhouse. His lock tight defense and runnin offense made the...

’47 Feature: Julius Thomas

As NFL free agency rumors swirl, one of the most intriguing prospects this offseason is Broncos tight-end, Julius Thomas. The former two-sport athlete has all the makings of a superstar tight-end, and numerous teams are vying to add him to their rosters. The Denver Broncos had one of the most dominant offenses over the last few years thanks to weapons like Thomas. His size and athleticism made him a difficult matchup for any opposing defender. Thomas caught 43 passes for 489 yards and 12 touchdowns during the 2014 season. In 2013, he caught 65 passes for 788 yards and 12...

Each year, the annual Sundance Film Festival takes over snowy Main Street in Park City, Utah. Each evening, from top to bottom, Main Street was lit up by the lights of parties and get-togethers hosted in theatres and retail...

For many of us who grew up watching football, we were first introduced to Roman numerals through Super Bowl logos. First appearing in Super Bowl V in 1970, we’ve been captivated by how the designs merged numbers with colors, cityscapes and prevailing themes of that year’s championship game. Come February 2016 though, for the first time in 40 years, the NFL will not affix Roman to the 50th Super Bowl. The logo will use the Arabic numeral 50, instead of Roman numeral “L”. But don’t panic, Roman numerals aren’t gone for good. The NFL plans to return to Roman numerals...

There are three words that define this year’s Patriots’ season: “Do Your Job.” It’s what they call “The Patriot Way.” It’s part edict, part instruction manual. It’s a simple blueprint plan for success. It all started with a Belichick speech, when the head coach instructed his players to just “do your job” during a game against the Baltimore Ravens. Not only did it motivate the Pats, but it also inspired the city of Boston. And now that quote is everywhere; on merchandise big and small, on signage promoting the playoffs, even players are wearing it. Not only did fans keep...
